The 2021 Eyecare Plus Conference, scheduled for late October on the Gold Coast, Queensland has been cancelled due to ongoing concerns about COVID-19.
The announcement in July came ahead of a decision, made by the Optical Distributors and Manufacturers Association of Australia and Optometry Victoria/ South Australia, to cancel O=MEGA21.
In a statement, Eyecare Plus Chair Justin Durkin said, “Unfortunately, the potential for extended and/or new lockdowns means planning now for interstate travel in October is almost impossible.
“Even if the current outbreak that has millions of Australians in lockdown is brought under control, the threat of further outbreaks causing further lockdowns and border closures will remain high for the foreseeable future.
“Therefore, in addition to the threat of potential exposure to the virus, the risk of interstate delegates being caught up in hotel quarantine due to snap border closures is too high to be acceptable.
“We know this is disappointing news, and this decision has not been made lightly, but after exploring all available options we believe the decision to postpone at this time is the only prudent course of action.”
Eyecare Plus is working with The Star Gold Coast to secure a new date for 2022.
