In 2011, SMILE (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction) was introduced worldwide, and only nine years later, Zeiss has announced a new milestone with over 3.5 million procedures being performed in over 1,000 clinics around the globe. During this time, the technology has been well-investigated with over 600 peerreviewed articles published.
The procedure is currently available for myopic patients only, however excellent one-year follow-up results have been shown in a multi-centre study for hyperopic patients of up to +7D, as presented in Athens at the 2019 European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons’ winter meeting.1
Known as a flapless procedure, SMILE has gained popularity in clinics around the world due to its inherent advantages such as preservation of corneal nerves, stronger corneal biomechanical stability and faster wound recovery time.
