Light intensity varies enormously. While our ears cope with a relatively small range of volumes, eyes are regularly exposed to an extraordinarily large range of light levels (Figure 1). On a typical day, a person will move from a fully adapted dark state upon waking, to indoor illumination levels. They will spend time viewing illuminated digital devices, head outside into sunlight, and then drive in both daylight and night-time conditions, likely having spent time in an office with a mixture of artificial and natural light in between.
