The Fortune “Change the World” list for 2019 has recognised Essilor as one of 52 influential companies. This acknowledgment recognises Essilor’s commitment to eradicate poor vision by 2050, achieved by a focus on “improving lives by improving sight”.
The ranking highlights how Essilor’s action to address issues of vision health across the world has had a significant social impact on people’s lives, while representing an important shared value opportunity.
With 6.6 billion people worldwide in need of vision correction by 2050, of which five billion will be affected by the myopia epidemic, taking immediate action is key. Even though a pair of eyeglasses can answer most of the world’s vision needs, the lack of access to, and awareness of vision care remains low, both in developed and developing countries.
Essilor states it is committed to continuing to drive innovation across the market, establish access points globally, and create greater awareness and advocacy for good vision. The Group has also expanded its approach to fight uncorrected poor vision, a disability affecting 2.5 billion people, 90% of who live in the base-of-the-pyramid (BoP)economies.
The Fortune ranking also recognises Essilor’s 2.5 New Vision Generation and BoP Innovation Lab which, with the help of more than 600 partners, has enabled access to a pair of glasses for more than 25 million people across 62 countries in need of vision correction, as well as empowered entrepreneurs to provide ongoing access to vision care for 250 million people.
Hubert Sagnières, Chairman of Essilor, said, “We receive Fortune’s award with pride and responsibility. This distinction is a tremendous endorsement, as we are building a sustainable business model to solve a global problem at scale. We are committed to achieving our ambition to eradicate poor vision: as an industry leader, we believe it is our duty to continue pushing the boundaries of optical solutions; all of Essilor’s employees, from leadership to shop floor, share and live this ambition.”
