Diabetes mellitus is a multifactorial disease that can significantly affect the retina as well as the cornea. While the effect of diabetes on the retina is often described, less attention has been paid to the cornea. Yet the epithelium, endothelium, nerves, and immune cells are all affected, and vision and ocular health are at significant risk. People with diabetes commonly complain about dry eye symptoms including dryness, burning, redness, pain, and ocular irritation.
