Optometry Giving Sight: A Year in Focus…

mivision | 1 December 2011
2011 was a big year for Optometry Giving Sight. It got off to a flying start with the Crystal Ball in March when more than 200 guests from the optical profession and industry descended on Sydney's Epping Club, raising AUD$15,000 through ticket sales, a raffle, a silent auction and the sale of masks in recognition of the 'Show us your eyes' theme.

Optometry Giving Sight (OGS) not only has Ciba Vision to thank for its help in organising the event, but also the many corporate sponsors and other companies who donated prizes and joined us on the night.

Ten lucky guests each left with a case of fine wines won through a silent auction. A total of 40 cases were generously donated by Queensland optometrists Colin and Heather Waldron, the remaining 30 went on to be auctioned in May, thanks to support from Grays Online, and raised AUD$12,000 in total.

Thanks to sponsors and the excellent organisation by the Optometrists Association of Australia Victoria, 88 players enjoyed a fabulous day of golf at the Yarra Yarra Golf Club in Melbourne in March, raising a total
of AUD$8,000.

We were delighted to see record numbers of practices signing up for the World Sight Day Challenge this year - nearly 400 took part, up 20 per cent on 2010. Red t-shirts were out in force, donation boxes on display and lolly jar guessing contests, raffles and bake sales under way.

Many sausages were sizzled at the offices of optical supply companies including Rodenstock, Maui Jim and Mimo. General Optical supplemented its BBQ with a raffle and raised additional funds by selling discontinued frames to staff.

Aussie optometry students had a bumper year raising almost AUD$11,000 to date, not only through on-campus bake sales and sausage sizzles, but also through more adventurous activities such as going legally blind for a day, by wearing contact lenses to simulate refractive error.

This year we welcomed the Optical Distributors & Manufacturers Association (ODMA) on board as a Silver In-Kind sponsor - the leading industry association has been helping us reach out to manufacturers through its conference and its communications to members, encouraging participation
in the World Sight Day Company Challenge.

Finally, OGS couldn't let this opportunity pass to once again thank mivision, our media sponsor, for the generous support the team has given us in helping us to communicate with you, their readers, about the important work that your donations contribute to.
