mEYE World 2016 Healthcare Professional Category Winner Dr Kerry Boytell
Macular Disease Foundation Australia is calling for entries into the mEYE World Photographic Competition 2017 and is asking eye care professionals to submit a photograph that captures a glimpse of their world. This year’s theme is: “See My World - in your own backyard”.

Now in its seventh year, the popular competition aims to raise awareness of macular disease, the leading cause of blindness and severe vision loss in Australia.

A high profile judging panel will decide this year’s winners, including media identity and Patron of Macular Disease Foundation Australia Ita Buttrose, internationally recognised photographer Rex Dupain, and one of Australia’s longest serving news photographers Alan Pryke.

Ita Buttrose says, “This exciting competition is a privilege to judge. I’m particularly looking forward to seeing people’s creativity shine through with this year’s theme ‘See my world – in your own backyard’.”

“Photography captures the world around us like no other medium; it shows our interests and passions, and often reveals what we truly treasure. I want everyone who enters our competition to reflect on how precious their sight is and to treasure that too.”

This free competition is open to all and offers four categories: an open category, junior, macular disease community, and healthcare professional. There are great prizes to be won.

Foundation CEO Julie Heraghty said, “There is a great synergy between the visual arts, the world of photography, and the work of eye healthcare professionals in saving sight. Photographs entered by healthcare professionals each year are truly amazing and remind us all of the precious nature of our sight. I encourage all eye health professionals to be involved and enter a photograph into this year’s competition.”

Dr. Kerry Boytell, a retired ophthalmic anaesthetist, was the winner of last year’s healthcare professional category with a beautiful photograph of Milford Sound. Describing her entry, Dr. Boytell said, “Milford Sound in New Zealand is usually shrouded in mist. It was a unique experience to be able to see it on one of its few clear days per year. Being blessed with good vision is essential to experience the visual wonders of our world.”

mEYE World Photographic Competition runs until 3 October 2017.
